In Punto Banco there are 2 hands; the Punto (or Player) and Banco (or Banker) hand. Unlike all other card games, in Baccarat you cannot make any moves based on the cards you are dealt. Similar to what happens with Roulette, your strategy needs to be based on the bets that you place. In this case, you’ll be wagering on whether the Player or Banker hand will have a higher total, or if there will be a tie.
Once you’ve placed your bet, the 2 hands are each dealt 2 cards. Aces are worth 1, number cards from 2 to 9 are worth their stated value, and 10s and royal cards are worth 0. Hands are totalled by adding the 2 cards together, and then dropping the 10-value placeholder. A 9 and a 3 would give you a hand of 2 rather than 12, for example.
This means that the highest possible hand in a Baccarat game is 9; it is called a Natural and wins automatically. When neither hand totals a 9, the Punto hand must Hit when it totals 5 or less, and the Banker hand if it adds up to anything less than 3. The hand with the highest total wins, and if you correctly backed the Player hand you get a 1:1 payout.
You win the same if you backed the Banker hand and it was higher, less 5%. Wagering on and landing a tie gets you an incredible 8:1 return, but be warned; the risk is as high as the payout in this case and the steep house edge sits at over 14%.
